Book Club Pick

Alright, all you reading fans out there,
I sure could use your help
It's my turn to pick the book for book club next month.

This month we read The Secret Life of Bees, which I actually enjoyed but I'm not sure I would dare recommend. Too much swearing and weird body consciousness.
And sorry, Twilight has been done.

The last time it was my turn I chose All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot.
I was harassed endlessly for all the swear words.
But we finally decided that if you say them with an English accent, then they don't count :)
And I did try to use a Southern accent on that Bee book, but somehow it made them worse.
At least I won't be the only one being harassed now.

Anyway

What are your suggestions?
Have any all-time favorites that would be perfect to share?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't know if I have any that you haven't already read! And probably own! lol Jon and I have tried a few books lately but they've all been lame. I've heard that Austenland by Shannon Hale is good, but the waiting list is crazy. Have you read the Princess Academy by Shannon Hale? I don't think she could have chosen a more girly title, but it is actually pretty decent and an easy read. Jon even liked it a little, or at least he pretended to. ;) Actually I'd feel pretty confident in recommending any of Shannon Hale's books. I haven't heard anything negative on any of them. The only other one I've read of hers is Goose Girl, and that one I remember as being VERY good. Good luck! I'm sure you'll pick a good one!

Well, I've read Princess Academy and really liked it, but I've never heard of Austenland. And I looked just now, and our library doesn't even have it. Of course, that's to be expected of our library... They do have Goose Girl, though, so maybe I'll check that one out and give it a try. Thanks Jamie!

Hmmm... well, I can recommend some books but... I am an English teacher and so perhaps your audience will not like it. But Shawn's sister had us read "The Glass Castle." Super interesting and one of our favorites--it's about a girl whose family is basically homeless her whole life and she and her siblings grew up and became upstanding citizens--supposed to be a true story. It was amazing. Another more dramatic but along those same lines is called "The Poisonwood Bible" about a family that goes to Africa to be missionaries (not our kind) and how they survive and the aftermath of everything that happens. I'm trying to think of the ones that we cried over because they were so good... oh ya, "The Beetle's Cellar"--about a school busload of kids who kids kidnapped by a cult leader :) Honestly one of my favorite ever, but maybe not a good one for young moms to read :) haha... anyway, hope that helps!

Eat, Love, Pray by Elizabeth Gillbert (I think that's her last name)

The Race by Richard North Patterson (this is a very timely novel about a tightly contested primary race - but if you don't want to talk politics, you might just want to read it yourself)

The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan (loved this book about a mother/daughter struggling to relate across a lifetime of secrets and cultural divides)

That's all my over-taxed brain can come up with at the moment.
